Building Sustainable Businesses in Africa

Although Africa is rich in many natural resources, the people who live there are the poorest in the world. Some areas in Africa have high concentrations of diamonds, oil, gold and other minerals, but these resources are finite and cannot be counted upon to provide sustainable wealth to future generations of Africans.

Cookies with a cause: As its tagline says, a small South African manufacturer of upmarket cookies and brownies is “creating opportunity, one bite at a time.” Khayelitsha is one of South Africa’s largest townships, located on the outskirts of Capetown. Its inhabitants are locked in a constant struggle against poverty, unemployment and violence. Two years ago, Alicia Polak, a former investment banker, founded The Khayelitsha Cookie Company (KCC). Ms Polak wanted to offer more than monetary aid, and decided to help the township’s women build a sustainable living.

Social Entrepreneurship - One Bite at a Time

There’s an unfamiliar fragrance emanating from the Cape Town townships of Khayelitsha. It’s the seductive smell of success — and of freshly baked cookies. The cookies, which include chocolate chunk, ginger snaps, brownies and “safari” biscuits, are the product of Khayelitsha Cookies, a social enterprise business venture imagined and executed by Alicia Polak, graduate of NYU and University of Cape Town School of Business. Ms. Polak’s main motivation for establishing Khayelitsha Cookies, having traveled extensively throughout the developing world and settled in South Africa, was to create viable forms of employment and income generation.

Sinking your teeth into a good old South African crunchie is wonderful, particularly when you’re thousands of miles away in New York, homesick for all things South African.

Thanks to the vision and perseverance of one-time investment banker Alicia Polak, whose aptly-named company Khaya Cookie Company (“khaya” meaning “home” in isiXhosa) is now exporting a range of shortbread and crunchies in the US, more South Africans abroad have the opportunity to savour a delicious taste of home. And a growing number of Americans are acquiring a taste for the traditional South African fare, marketed here as “krunchi”.

Khaya Cookie Company – From South Africa With Love

Khaya means “home” in Xhosa, the Bantu language of southeast South Africa. It is in this region, deep in the winelands of South Africa, that the Khaya Cookie Company makes their home. The Khaya Cookie Company produces a variety of delicious cookies and delivers some much-needed “TLC” to a region where poverty is rampant.

  • T stands for Training—job skills training for the men and women in this impoverished region.
  • L stands for Locally sourced ingredients—including rooibos extract, grapeseed powder, organic apricots, and butter.
  • C stands for Commitment—their commitment to operate a sustainable company that creates societal wealth by reducing what it calls “tin-cup dependency”.
